Most people I know have everything they need and pretty much everything they want. Perhaps that is why we are surprised by Jesus’ comment as Luke tells the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.
Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’
How can it be that Jesus needs anything? After all, he is God – fully human and fully divine. Why would God need anything? The story of Acts, which is part 2 of Luke’s history, reminds us that God does need something. God needs you. God needs you to continue the ministry of Jesus. God needs you and me to be the church, the body of Christ. God needs us to care for the poor, love the outcasts, and speak truth to power.
