When I was first introduced to the congregation in the fall of 2011, there was a time for questions and answers. One of those questions has stuck with me and I return to it from time to time. “Your bio says that you are a progressive pastor. What does that mean?” I don’t recall how I answered the question but I do remember giving it a great deal of thought in the days and weeks after that meeting in case I ever got the question again.
If I were asked that question today, I would say being a progressive pastor means that as a Christian, I am always progressing towards the new creation that God promises us in the scriptures. Over the next five Sundays, we are going to take a closer look at that new creation as it appears in the book of Revelation. Yes, the book of Revelation. However, instead of exploring Revelation as a codebook for the end of the world, I want us to see it as good news that’s intended to be a blessing to all who read it.
