Community service is work done by an individual or group for the benefit of others. Most churches are involved in some form of community service. Perhaps it is restoring a home in need of repairs or coaching children. Sometimes it involves advocating for people whose voices are not being heard. Churches participate in community service because Christians are called to be servants of those in need. That is absolutely correct. However, we are also called to be servants of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In Paul’s letter to the church in Colossae, he writes, “This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.” Being a servant of the gospel is a reminder that our service goes beyond feeding the hungry and caring for the poor. It means offering them the hope we have in Jesus Christ and sharing the good news of God’s love.
